I am likely reiterating what many have already said, but I want to share
my experience as an aspiring WordPress developer back in the day. It was a
huge deal to me whenever I would release a plugin on the repo. I would
literally check the growth and download charts every day. If there were a
dip, I would challenge myself to add more plugin features, improve the
description in the repo or provide more detailed screenshots. Access to
data about my plugins encouraged me to make them better.
Most of us following this ticket are established WordPress professionals
at this point. While this data is still extremely valuable to us, I want
to stress how vital data like this is to first-time plugin authors and
aspiring WordPress professionals. I know the data itself was flawed, and I
am sympathetic to the obfuscation argument. However, I believe the lack of
information about how a plugin is performing disincentives new plugin
submissions and, more importantly, the continual improvement of existing
plugins.
Plugin data has played an essential role in making the repository what it
is today. There is always room for improvement, perhaps by making data
private to plugin authors. But in the end, I think we can all agree that a
vibrant and flourishing plugin repository has an incalculable benefit to
the WordPress community. Let's strive for a compromising solution that
satisfies all parties involved.
