Comment (by coffee2code):

I had some discussions about this with @mdburnette and @topher1kenobe. I'm
 partial to something like:

 > ''Photo by [https://profiles.wordpress.org/pollyplummer/ Sarah Gooding]
 on the [https://wordpress.org/photos/photo/26962070d8/ WordPress Photo
 Directory].''

Where photo contributor's display name is linked to their wp.org profile
and "WordPress Photo Directory" is linked to the photo. Though maybe
"Photo" should link to the photo and it should be:

 > ''[https://wordpress.org/photos/photo/26962070d8/ Photo] by
 [https://profiles.wordpress.org/pollyplummer/ Sarah Gooding] on the
 [https://wordpress.org/photos/ WordPress Photo Directory].''

Maybe we want to prefix it with "CC0-licensed photo by..." to tout the CC0
 licensing?

Doesn't seem too overtly promotional, while still citing the original
photo specifically, its author, and the Photo Directory itself as being a
 thing.

Whatever the exact text is, I envision a block below the photo (on single
photo pages) that states something to the effect of "Though attribution is
not required, it would be appreciated!" with a preview of the attribution
text and a button to copy it to the clipboard.
