 This is actually possible already via #3935.

 In your example, `banner-772x250-it_IT.png` is the supported format.

 I don't think any plugins really use this functionality right now, as it
 was never properly announced. If you run into any issues with it, please
 open a new ticket so that we can fix any bugs :)
