 Thanks for your feedback @alexstine! It seems that everything you've
 raised is something that can't be fixed specifically for the forums, and
 will have to be considered a change upstream (cc @johnny5).

 The only way to diverge from the upstream behaviour would be to have a way
 to disable it entirely, which I'm still not convinced is a viable option
 due to how intertwined the editor and content filters are - It might be
 possible, but would likely loose some form of functionality in doing so.
