 I can support a solution where the link is only visible to the reply
 author, the OP and moderators.

 Just to be clear, this applies from the initial posting?
 It does not require moderator action, or self-service from the OP?

 Would it be possible to deal with the related concern / ticket in this
 same patch?
 I.e. can we just make all links in the *original* post (not replies) only
 visible to logged in users?
 That should take care of situations where new people don't use the correct
 field, or use it in the post body in addition to the "page I need help
 with" field.
 It would also have the benefit of being a disincentive for spam.
