 I have added your suggestions to Docs Handbook here:

 However, the second suggestion might need some work from Meta team before
 we can implement it. We need easy-to-implement model/block where we can
 upload .gif image and its thumbnail and the rest of functionality is taken
 care of (probably by Javascript).
