 Unfortunately this is a limitation of bbPress, and needs to be reported
 upstream.

 bbPress isn't aware it's a 404 archive until it attempts it's topic query,
 which only happens at the point in the `<body>` where it renders the list.
 Performing the query earlier should be viable, but there's a lot of
 intertwined (and IMHO fragile) connections that make it happen.

 Although the two views you mentioned were wporg ones, the core bbPress
 views suffer the same, and it's not easy to just fix our query
