 Hi @ritterml, welcome to Meta Trac!

 The search functionality on that page is a Google Custom Search
 implementation, and they do offer a way to enable browser history but
 we're limited to the way they handle things. In testing I found out that
 while they'll trigger a new search with the initial search term after
 navigating back from an external site, all subsequent searches are still
 in history and can be accessed.
