Comment:

 The new plugin directory will likely have a completely different design,
 showing the screenshots in some different fashion. Therefore this is
 currently a "wontfix" for the existing plugin directory, as the new
 directory will replace it. Design considerations will need to be adjusted
 at that time.

 We may use a lightbox mechanism or not, it's currently uncertain.
 Regardless, the mime-type issue will be solved there.
