[wp-hackers] Purpose of 'draft' nav-menu items?

Greetings all,

I noticed that on every "add" of a menu item, WP is creating a new draft
for the nav menu item, even when not saved.

You can see these with:

SELECT * FROM `wp_posts` where post_type='nav_menu_item'

I was wondering what purpose draft menus are - it appears they are nowhere
visible after clicking add, and cancelling. Is there a way to clean these
up? Is it automatic?
