[wp-hackers] Allow users to upload their own images - hook to use?

This might sound stupid, because I am still learning.  But cant I use my
existing database I created, make a new row called image.  then use
wp_handle_upload to upload the file and resize it, then drop the url of the
image into the row along with the other data I am storing?
