The NextGEN plugin is one that is currently focused on images, and
already widely used.
There are several improvements that can be made to it, a few that I've
already found moving towards compatibility with the "post" post_type:
1. Tags for Albums and Galleries
2. Dates for Albums and Galleries
3. Publish status and scheduling for Albums, Galleries and Photos
I'm not sure where to begin submitting feedback on the plugin, I'm going
to need to be doing improvements on the plugin myself, so obviously if
there is a way to collaborate here, we could achieve something done to
fit the needs of a a few.

Alternately, anyone know of a good solid Image class/API in a GPL plugin or theme that I can consider using?
