Yes. This advise was right on the money.

so, this one works;
 [?php global $post; echo ("postid=" . $post->ID ); ?]

and this does not.
[?php global $post ?]
[? echo ("postid=" . $post->ID ); ?]

something to know about the way execPHP works..
