couldn't you conditionally add_post_meta() w/ your same get_children 
() request
(& get_headers values) you used to hack feed-rss2.php?

or (this next is stating-the-obvious, so you've probly already  
considered):
ask your users to Insert Into Post -- and let WP handle the enclosure
(assuming they're using the Media Uploader).
