Yes, planning to propose this as one of the improvements in core for 
3.3. Relevant tickets on trac so far:

If all goes according to plan, the class in core will be named WP_Editor 
too and will work pretty similarly to this code so this can be used for 
older versions of WP and 3.3 will have it built-in.
