Seriously, have you considered the above approach? Sounds like you are
building yourself a house of cards for no reason. You should get them to
fill out their bio and use their public profile screens instead of the
custom post type. Why isn't this acceptable?
The only real issue is that there's no TinyMCE in the About Me section of
the user profile screen. Maybe that's a dealbreaker but if you used the
other fields intelligently you could make up for it by showing their
avatars/URLs/twitter accounts etc. automatically on their profiles, removing
the need for links/images inside the biographical content. Adding new fields
to the profile screen is pretty easy, especially if the data could fall
under 'contact methods', which you can add to basically for free (
http://is.gd/GIRQT4)
As a bonus this method would promote a consistent style for all profiles
(which you can design not each individual user) and help people get all the
most important information onto their profiles without messing around with
the content of a post for hours.
You'd also want to change the permalink path for authors, but like modifying
the profile form it's trivial compared to the other ideas in this thread.
