We're not sure yet if we want to keep links as a custom post type or remove
them completely (leaving only a simple Links widget).

In either case, it would be good to have a plugin that does this (importing
the links table into wp_posts and providing the same interface, as the
current link manager). Later, it can either be included into core or point
users to it when the release is made.

So, maybe you should work on such a plugin. Feel free to open a ticket to
track your progress on this, if you want.
