How big is a "small install?" 100 sites? 1000 sites?

It unfortunate that this function is deprecated. This - and
switch_to_blog - seem to be obvious function for a network install.

Most large sites would be using caching solutions already for other
reasons, so these functions might not be that great of a performance
hit on those sites.
