[wp-hackers] Plugin Version Control & Source Code Hosting?

Hi all:

I pretty much completed launch of a big social media project based on WordPress for my client (and their client is a local Fortune 50 company.) Unfortunately they don't want me to publicly point it out as a WordPress site as they fear being hacked, but I am proud of the work I did on it and would like to release some of the plugin functionality I developed for it. I'll need to "clean up" before publicly releasing but I have two things I'm trying to figure out:

1.) Where's the best place to host the source code? Google code, or somewhere else?

2.) For those who have plugin projects that are independent of a specific website but for which you use on more than one of your WP sites, how do you manage the version control? Do you keep in a "Plugins" directory outside of a WP project somewhere and then have some type of project that keeps the most recent version of your original source in sync? Or maybe this is something than a Subversion client can handle on it's own?

I appreciate any input. I know we discussed topics related to #2 about 6 weeks ago but I was unfortunately not at a point then where I could devote any time to exploring and the details has since become too fuzzy to recall (even after re-reading some of those old messages.) Thanks in advance.
