Here's another option: Have the community set up http://adserver.wordpress.org and have it serve ads for people who follow community guidelines.  There, no "untrusted 3rd parties."

However the real question is: "How can Joost (and others) make some reasonable income off their plugin development efforts" and throwing out the objection "It's a security problem" when it need not be is a red herring.

Yes, you are right ads can have many permutations, not there's no reason that Joost's or those deemed "okay" by the community would need to have those problem.  That objection is much like saying "Some people drive cars recklessly so let's ban all cars."

That said, I'm lukewarm on the idea but feel it does a disservice to the debate to use assumptions that aren't necessarily valid.
