I have to admit I only have a vague understanding of the way WordPress does
localization, but I can't see how one of the issues I mentioned isn't a
problem.

If the localization happens to return a format string like 'zaza %s sese',
how could doing a "find replace" on __('Protected: ') ever remove *both*
'zaza' and 'sese'? This is admittedly an edge case, but I still don't see
how your solution resolves it.
