[wp-hackers] Recommended Themes & Plugins for a Workshop?

Hi all: 


As one of my efforts to contribute to the WordPress community I will on Monday be delivering a 3.5 hour WordPress Workshop[1] for 40 local entrepreneurs for the February meeting of a Meetup group[1] I organize. I will also thankfully be joined by almost 20 other local people with various skills to help out and ensure the workshop is a success. 

Tomorrow (Saturday) I will be spending the day preparing the workshop guide/handouts with the help of some of those 20 people. My plan is to give the attendees a selection of ~5 available themes to choose from, and have them install and configure ~10 plugins. Though I have some ideas for which themes and plugins to choose from I was wondering if any of you have suggestions regarding great starter themes and/or your top 10 plugins for new users of installed WordPress.

P.S. If anyone is a/knows of any commercial theme or plugin vendors who would be interested in allowing us to offer their themes during the workshop with the caveat that any workshop participant that selects one of them will agree on the honor system to buy it after the workshop I'd be happy to present your/their themes during the workshop.
