I don't want to sound negative about admin skinning in general, but
you can also always alter the CSS (or JS) of any site within your
browser (well, in Firefox anyway) using plugins like Stylish and
Greasemonkey. Lorelle pointed out a great example of this that changes
the functionality of the comment editing page, but the principle could
work for any change you wanted to make. Altering it in this way would
also leave your site alone and safe and limit mandatory maintenance.
You also wouldn't have to worry about browser compatibility as you'd
just see the (oh so awful) standard interface when you were away from
your main browser.
Unfortunately userstyles.org seems to be horribly parked at godaddy
right now so I can't check if there are already wp admin mods posted
there, and userscripts.org seems to be using the same search algorithm
as the wp plugin directory (
http://userscripts.org/scripts/search?q=wordpress ) so you'll have to
hunt around to find existing examples.
