I noticed something similar with WP 2.3.3 just this week: I create a new 
page and add a custom field without first saving the page. Then I hit 
publish. The page is gone but there is an unpublished draft with the 
custom field but without the content I entered into the page. Very 
annoying when you have to create a lot of pages with custom fields. :-/

I haven't searched in trac though if this is a known problem. Thought 
I'd check this when WP 2.5 is out... Ok, found it:

Now this is rather sad: "Opened 1 year ago". I really have to wonder if 
redoing the design of WP is more important than fixing bugs like this 
one. Bugs that force people to tell customers not to do something 
because of a bug in WP... :-/

Anyway, would these two bugs be related? Sounds like it to me...
