[wp-hackers] get_num_queries reports 80% increase?

Following the example of the Default theme, my custom theme uses
get_num_queries() and timer_stop(1) in the footer. Since I updated to
WP 2.5.1, I've seen the number of queries reported jump by about 80%.
Execution time reported by timer_stop has stayed about the same, but
that's not a terribly consistent metric anyway. I'm on a shared
server, so I expect to see a lot of fluctuation in there.

Has 2.5.1 really caused such a dramatic increase in queries, or has
something changed about the way get_num_queries reports?
