You might be interested in Operas "Small Screen" functionality in the desktop browser,
They use the same processing core in the Opera Mini(The web browser on mobile/other portable devices) as the desktop, and the small sreen functionality is supposed to provide a pretty good developing platform for mobile interfaces.
(It'll also show how much stuff you need to go through to get to useful parts in the current web interface with a mobile, Opera 9.5(alpha) doesnt seem to like inline JS in Small screen mode, not sure what 9.23 is like with it)
