Curt Woodard was working on a WP plugin that allowed simultaneous
login to multiple linked WordPress blogs. Not quite the same thing,
but similar.
I was helping him out with testing and such, and one thing I
discovered is that, while user management in the WP code is
theoretically abstracted in a way that should make this easy, the
reality (that is, the code) is that the abstraction was not fully
implemented, and thus doesn't quite work for this type of thing.
I would have to dig up the WP core function again, but basically
there is a wrapper function (or two) relating to managing users that
isn't used -- other core code skips the wrapper and goes directly to
the main function. If it were wrapped properly, it would be fairly
easy for 3rd party plugins to modify the behavior without having to
recreate the primary functionality -- by replacing the wrapper.
Another issue, as discussed in that thread, is that WordPress stores
table name information in fields, which makes it a lot harder to
simply access the appropriate fields -- you also have to fill in
_other_ fields with the name of the field you want to reference!
