OK, we can chalk this up to operator error. I don't know what I did last
time, but I just tried it with:
rm -r -f dirname
and it works; the whole directory is deleted. (I'm using FreeBSD.)
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming (which is "A
Charlie Brown Christmas" right now).

What OS are you using?
I don't understand what you mean by can't delete the directory when
you are done? What commands are you trying to run? Can you provide
step by step what you are trying to do?
