I'm not sure what you mean by "client version."
If that's the version of phpMyAdmin your host has running, it shouldn't
make a difference...
MySQL doesn't have "clients" so much as libraries - WordPress uses the
PHP MySQL Driver to connect to the MySQL database - be it MySQL 3, 4, or 5.
