Are concerns over spam is really warranted here. We all put up with spam 
in other open systems, like blog comments and email (and have come up 
with very good counter measures - like akismet). I can see how they 
(wp.com) would want users to continue using their service, since that's 
why they set it up.

I wonder if there is a place for a plugin, or something along those 
lines that would create a similar community feel (and features) amongst 
distributed blogs, rather than just between blogs hosted by wp.com.
