I agree with what others have said. Categories are a more permanent
solution, whereas tags are kinda throw-away. I have no problem giving
a post a tag that I might not ever use again. Just whatever is on my
mind at the moment.
Categories on the other hand infer something long-term: You'll be
putting more posts of a similar nature in that category, in the
future.
I also have hundreds of tags, and I don't want to see a long list of
tags similar to the list of categories on the write page. So even if
they're some what similar on the backend, they need to be treated
differently.
