[wp-hackers] has anyone looked at making Edit panels 'simpler'for novices?

On one condition: better AJAX - the widgets' AJAX is very incompatible and buggy!

I hadn't touched the new Widgets/Sidebar combo until two days ago, but I'd completely agree that (IMHO) would be an excellent way of dealing with the Write page.
