As a quick stop-gap measure, use some caching mechanism - put PEAR Cache 
around the whole blog, use the $_COOKIE array, and the url as a key and 
those hosts should see a lot less MySQL hits and heavy PHP processes.

It might be worth putting /archives/ into robots.txt so that search 
engines don't bring down the site too.
