[wp-hackers] Question about the_author_email template tag

I guess there has been some debate posted in the Discussion Page of 
http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/the_author_email about whether 
or not the_author_email and related email tags actually do "hide" the 
email address from harvesters or not. Can someone address this concern 
on that page and on the discussion page so we know for sure how this tag 
works.
