For the postgresql, I doubt that will become an official project any time 
soon, because of the reliance of almost all time handling on mysql's time 
and date functions that postgresql doesn't have. As far as optimization, I 
think that a lot of plugins are more of the cause of high overhead than a 
plain old WordPress.
