This, but not because of lost content. It just makes a lot more sense for
themes to set up user-configurable widget areas than to set up ad-specific
areas. Widgets can contain anything, and a copy-pasta ad code works
perfectly well in a text widget. But without being limited to ads, as a
user can put any widget they like there.

Making it more generic makes it fit more use cases.
