That shouldn't happen. May be someone else is able to help you out. I am not aware of this issue. The home.php of your theme seems perfectly fine, no issues there.

That's the catch... in my theme, index.php is being used to render the preview page. Why so?

home.php is the higher in template hierarchy. Read Here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy#Home_Page_display

It loads by default for a homepage.

Also for some reason, the preview does not render home.php... can we choose which template to show on front in preview? like choose b/w blog or home.php...

You could add a fallback menu in your next theme update. Theme previews are generated with the theme activated using default settings.

I created a theme Gold for wordress.org. The menu gets activated once the user creates it in the admin. This creates a problem in the the theme preview in wordpress.org. Also the home.php is not displayed at front. Is this normal? Aren't we allowed to choose our theme preview?
