This is great, I learnt something - these two functions, looking through the source code of which I find, if I am reading it right, the answer to my earlier question regarding serialisation of options.
If nobody has any objections (perhaps I should ask on a wp-docs mailing list?) I would like to make the following updates to the Codex:
1. Add a pointer at the bottom of the pages for get_option() and set_option(), pointing theme creators to these two functions as the preferred way to store theme settings.
2. Update these two Codex pages with a description of their usage.
