Your suggestions are all great and I personally prefer tabs over subpages.
One reason is switching between tabs is easier (and faster)

But talking in general, I feel choice should be given to theme-developers.
This point can be added as "recommendations" but making it "required" is bit
restrictive.
Just an opinion!
