This is generally not clear to most people so here goes:

"Please note that GPLv3 is not compatible with GPLv2 by itself." ~
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#GNUGPL

Some GPLv2 licenses specifically allow you to use a later version (eg v3),
but *not* WordPress.

The WordPress' license (GPLv2 only) and the GPLv3 are specifically *
incompatible*.
