It's kind of like The Club versus LoJack argument.  One makes your site
less appealing to spammers, the other makes spamming less appealing in
general.  nofollow, if applied uniformly, offers greater social benefit.
Traditional Club methods just create an arms race that does little to
reduce overall spamming levels.

Or, something like that.  My comments have been turned off for years.
