As stated in a thread at the forum:

developers, allusion (is that Matt?, photomatt is the profile's
website), stated that maybe we could work against having a file_exists
very early in the php inclusion process, so it will be posibble to
make these kind of caching "plugins" as the thread describes...

My questions is: Will this be implemented, or has the idea been dropped? :)
