I would prefer to see a more robust plugin hook that allowed people to 
select from a number of possible methods to filter spam comments.

Perhaps it's a good idea to include an auto-close right now, but I would 
prefer to see all of the comment moderation code move into a plugin that 
is enabled in the default install, and allow plugin authors to 
supplement/replace this with new methods rather than necessitate 
rewriteing the core every time a more effective method is devised.

See also: The extraction of the Geo functions into a plugin.  Assuming 
this is used as the prototype for this type of core-to-plugin 
transition, I suggest that the comment moderation code move in this 
direction.
