There's no reason to modify the posts table, or clutter up the UI. 
Probably the best way to go about this is expand the code that loops 
over the links for pingbacks to be more general purpose and use the 
response headers to determine if a MIME type or extension should be 
"enclosed" and then add this info to custom fields.
