I think threaded comments (and ping/trackbacks?) should be a plugin for 
1.3 if at all possible. The best way for this to happen is for someone 
to start writing it now and if they get to a breaking point let us know 
the most unobtrusive API hook we could add for them to be able to make 
it work. We're stingy about cluttering features but fast and easy with 
adding API hooks where people need them.
