I was just brainstorming possible ways that it might be done (using the 
plugin you suggest) without altering/replacing the existing files.  The 
less that a user has to do to activate the plugin, the better - right?

Also, upgrading WP becomes easier when you don't modify the WP core 
files, since the changes won't get accidentally overwritten in the upgrade.
