[wp-hackers] Images, images, EVERYWHERE!

Based on conversations w/ Matt, I believe his vision is to have all
"user" content (images, etc.) in the wp-content directory. His argument
is that people shouldn't put things in the wp-images dir because it can
be overwritten when they upgrade. The wp-content dir is the area that
won't be overwritten. I'm not sure that the users know this though.
I've expressed some concerns about this, I like having (what I
consider) important files and folders at the root level so they are
more easily discovered by users. Things I would promote include the
'install.php' script, the 'upgrade.php' script and the 'plugins'
directory. I've also considered if it would be a good idea to create a
'wp-utilities' dir or similar for the bookmarklet, sidebar, etc.
Matt has pointed out to me that there has been a good deal of feedback
that there is too much at the root level already, that it is confusing
for people who install WP at the root level of their web server.
Perhaps the recent changes to allow index.php to live outside the WP
root will make this less of an issue?
Matt, apologies if I've misrepresented your sentiments here - feel free
to correct as needed.
Cheers,
