For those who don't care for a format that verbose, I suggest using the
ISO date format:
2004-08-23.

Actually, many Americans aren't that smart. I'm speaking as someone who
used to talk to travel agents about flight times -- and many of THEM
couldn't wrap their heads around 24-hour time (even though their CRSes use
it). I used to be in travel agent support for the luxury division of
Expedia, so I did that all day.
