[wp-hackers] PHP5 and WP Development

I don't want to start a war, but one of the great things about WordPress is
the fact that it is open source, so if someone comes along and wants to
create a PHP5 dependent version, they are free to do so. That being said, I
agree with everyone that it is in the best interest of most people to focus
on what is out there now, PHP4.

I think WordPress is moving in the right direction with the wpdb class,
which should allow enough freedom so that if someone wants to add support
for the new mysqli functions or add SQLite support, without too much work.
With plugins, anyone easily add on PHP5 dependent code to any of the hooks.
I need to check out the new SimpleXML and XSLT processing which could make
for some interesting projects.

I searched for a WordPress roadmap, but all I came up with were a couple
short threads on the forums and a very short "Roadmap: True Multi-blog
support will be provided in the future." on the wiki. Is the best place for
a glimpse of the future to look at mosquito for features? Is there any sort
of these features will be in 1.3, those will be in 1.4, etc?

I haven't been very involved with the development so far, but once I find
some time, I am definitely willing to commit myself to helping this project
out.
