 I feel the same way about this approach as I felt in
 https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/6535#comment:4 - it stinks
 that an `error_type` param is the only way to ensure backward
 compatibility, but so be it.

 I have not tested all of @hnla's scenarios, but the general strategy looks
 good to me.
